Falkland Lamp, Bruno Munari, Danese, 1964
Aluminum, Elastic fabric, 165×40 cm
450 Euro
The Falkland lamp, designed by Bruno Munari in 1964 for Danese Milan, consists of a tubular aluminium structure that is covered with elastic. The aluminium rings are spaced at varying intervals, creating a sense of visual rhythm. Through gravity and tension, the lamp becomes stretched like a stocking, and the intensity of the light and shadow changes within each curvaceous segment.
The lamp's shape was inspired by Munaris research on natural organisms, and the way in which materials and shapes occuring in nature seem to correspond to the functions they carry. Munari called these “spontanous shapes”. The lamp's shapes meet all requirements that Munari considers as essential for a good design: simplicity, efficiency, minimum storage bulk and maximum return. The long, flexible structure can be collapsed for easy storage or transport.
The Falkland lamp has become one of the classic icons of 20th century design and can be found in museum collections worldwide. The lamp is in good condition, with signs of wear consistent with age.
Bruno Munari contributions to design thought are immeasurable. Working across the disciplines of art, graphic design, industrial design, and publishing, Bruno Munari is among the most celebrated Italian talents of the 20th century. In 1966, his highly influential book Design as Art expounded on the importance of design in everyday life, as well as the democratization of art and design.
